Very nice and cruisey placement as a Rehab Reg. Beautiful location with many lovely beaches. Town is ok too. The workload was very manageable. Consultants were locums but very approachable and available when needed. Lovely and helpful nursing and allied health staff. The hospital uses powerchart. As a rehab reg you might need to go to Lismore Hospital for consults but Megan the admissions nurse will go with you. Accommodation in Lennox Head was a lovely 3 bedroom unit all to myself. The only drawback were random overnight on call shifts to cover rehab and gen med wards with admins constantly changing date and lack of aircon in my accommodation.

Ballina is a small and moderately busy ED that is pleasant to work in. Day shifts feature 1-2 RMOs with either a FACEM or a CMO on during the day and the evening. Nights are typically solo. The facility itself is reasonably small and dated but both the nursing and medical teams while I was there were amazing. There are only iSTAT bloods on site and formals are sent to Lismore which can take hours. There is x-ray and CT during hours, but after 6pm there's x-ray on-call, and no regular access to CT which is annoying given the patient load. Accommodation across the road at the Homestead Motel was really spacious with a generous room with kitchen, ensuite, balcony, living room area and public pool - I highly recommend it. The best coffee in town that I found was a The Gallery. Overall a really pleasant locum!

Welcoming and friendly team in ED, enjoyed spending time in the department. A smaller hospital with pathology having to be sent to Lismore 3/4 times a day, and radiology only available in hours. However there is a iStat machine for some results and transfer to Lismore for those urgent care is possible. Working with a FACEM on the floor, and other RMO's/Reg's on 3 shift times during the day, so for the evening shift you become the only junior after 8pm. The hospital uses Powerchart for notes/orders with plenty of computers available for you to take into a consultations. Handover to a night Reg around 10.30pm and this gives you a good amount of time to finalise notes and review/sign off results. The nursing staff are amazing and get things started on patients so that when the doctors review things more smoother. I would recommend this role to others with ED experience and have a willingness to learn. The set up is taking the history/exam and checking in with the consultant when they are available so previous ED experience is definitely recommended so that you can start relevant investigations as required. Given the smaller number of staff and beds it provides opportunities for case discussions in more detail than a busy tertiary hospital. Working closely with the FACEM is a great opportunity to learn as well. I stayed in a nearby hotel which had apartment rooms. This was perfect with kitchen facilities and quiet rooms. It also had a great view from the balcony. A walk along the beach and a visit to the Big Prawn would be my recommendations.
