Maitland ED is a very busy emergency department offloading into a hospital in a state of perpetual bed block. The main issue here seems to be flow, and the whole place feels very bunged up. Patients are often waiting 12 hours or more before being seen, and more than a day before a bed is found in the hospital, if they are being admitted. A consequence of this is patients are often pretty frustrated by the time they get round to seeing a doctor. There is very good support, with a lovely team of consultants, and everyone that I met was really nice. There are no med regs at Maitland (apparently removed due to "unsafe working conditions".) I don't know what it is like during the day, however at night this means that the ED doctors tend to do a lot of the work that would otherwise be handed over to the med reg. This means I found I was spending a lot more time with patients than I normally would. The policy overnight is to refer all medical admissions to the on call consultant in the morning, and I was a bit dubious about the quality of the medical consultants that I found myself handing over to, and generally had to push hard for them to accept what would otherwise be barn door admissions (I wonder if this explains the unsafe working conditions). The accommodation was in a motel about a 10 minute drive away, which was comfortable enough. The booking of travel and accommodation was very smooth. The cafe at the front of the hospital does the most amazing bacon and egg croissants.
