Very friendly hospital with good communication. The department can be pretty busy with not a lot of space to see new patients. Generally investigations have been started before you do your consultation which makes it much easier once you actually are able to see the patients. There is a FACEM during the day and good handovers between shift times. There is less clear information on escalation of patients with mental health presentations out of hours but I think they are testing a new system when I was there. The notes from ED are on paper, though most of the doctors complete the discharge summary on CAP which counts as the notes from their time in ED. Medications are prescribed on Medchart, fluids and insulin on paper. I stayed in the nearby Crescent Motel which was fine for a short period of time, had a fridge, kettle and microwave. It was around 5 minutes from the hospital. I didn't see much of Taree apart from the river area which was nice, and there is also an Aldi opposite the hospital if you need it.

The workload was quite variable over my range of night shifts, but overall I would describe this role as half-way between a resident and a registrar. You are the only doctor on the wards overnight, and are able to call the ICU SRMO and anaesthetics registrar for help if needed (and they also attend MET calls). I did have to call some of the gen med consultants overnight, and they were nice and quite helpful. The nursing staff overnight were unfortunately not able to collect bloods or insert cannulas which significantly impacted workload. Overall, I did learn a lot over these night shifts and would recommend to doctors with an interest in gen med.

I did the ward SRMO night shifts. They were within my capabilities as a PGY3 RMO. You cover all the wards and CCU by yourself, but there is an ICU Reg and an anaesthetic SRMO on site for the rapids. My shifts were very manageable, had lots of time to relax but there was a consistent flow of patients to review. I heard some horror stories from other locums who have worked here, just with some unsafe situations for patients and things falling through the cracks easily, but I had no issues whilst here. Good rate, but accommodation could be better - I was put in Marco Polo Motor inn by the hospital, classic 70's motel vibe but with the hourly rate I can't complain. IT systems all worked, but there is a Medical Officer Noticeboard that they put out of hours jobs onto - I didn't have access for my first 2 night shifts and IT "couldn't do anything about it", but I just got nurses to call on the DECT phone so was no issue. Also of note: night shifts start at 11.30pm to 8.30am - all the paperwork they send you in the lead up re. role descriptions etc have different information, and some mention a handover at 9pm and one at 10pm so I was confused on my first day - none of these handovers happen, you just meet the evening SRMO at 11.30pm, find out outstanding tasks and get the pager/phone and that is it. Med admin are nice but no clue about the specifics of the job. They also reference a handover you are meant to go to in the morning - while this exists, I just updated relevant registrars via phone or in person at 8am and then left.
