The city does not skimp on cultural events either. Time your relocation right and you might just catch the renowned Dark Mofo festival, famous for its bold art installations and winter solstice swim. Alternatively, the Taste of Tasmania food festival is the place to be for gourmet delights and local vinos.

Travelling here is a breeze! Fly into Hobart International Airport from any major Australian city and it's just a 20-minute drive to the heart of Hobart, right where the Royal Hobart Hospital stands proudly. Enjoyed my time in Hobart ED. Busy with lots of bed block, but good mix of cases and supportive FACEMs. Hybrid paper-digital system with digital notes and lab results but paper obs/med charts. Referral system entirely through med tasker app on mobile devices. Accomodation as good as anywhere I’ve worked. They are flexible in allowing you to book a nearby aparthotel or Airbnb. Hobart city and surrounding suburbs are delightful to spend days off. Lots of cosy cafes and bakeries and restaurants from fine dining to casual eats.

I worked in O+G for 6 weeks and had a great time. Supportive team and great learning experience. It can get quite busy on labour ward and there’s often opportunities for practical skills like suturing / implanon insertion / US etc. Very nice facilities but strange design and hard to find a sense of direction around the hospital.

Plastics RMO job, average 11.5 hours of work a day. Is a classic surgical rotation, rounding 7 am finishing around 6pm ish everyday. Inpatient load was very manageable, and largely taken care of by the intern with your assistance. Spent lots of time in clinic seeing patients and helping all the registrars with booking imaging and chasing pathology for patients. Could help in theatre too if you want with a good culture of inviting juniors in. On Fridays the RMOs have a punch biopsy clinic in the afternoon that you do by yourself, but well set up and clear instructions on how to do it. Team consisted of 4 registrars (1 accredited, 2 unaccredited and 1 from PNG doing some professional development on Aus) and a few consultants who were lovely to chat to in clinic etc. IT system is DMR for medical results and history and clinic, but paper based for all inpatients. Stayed at Salamanca Inn, lovely 10-15 min walk along the harbour too and from work, nice apartment with some light. Had a free laundry to use and they provided detergent etc. Also has a spa and 10m swimming pool which is a very rare Hobart sight. Bit small for laps but spa was a small luxury. Great location for Salamanca markets on a Saturday, and nice walk to Bathurst Street for Sunday farmers market. Also just round the corner from Salamanca Fresh (bougie supermarket with fancy tasmanian products and fresh salads and lasagna etc. so you don't need to cook it you cbf ;) Is a good rotation if you are keen on surgery. Also Hobart Ressies is amazing, full sandwich bar everyday, and a "metabolic meeting" 10am on a Thursday morning where they just deliver tonnes of pastries to Ressies and all doctors go to eat and talk. Make sure to pay the $25 per week for a casual Locum membership (bank details on the wall when you walk in) is well worth it because you don't need to buy lunch or bring food at all, and helps to support all the good work they do. Is also great for night shifts, with heaps of cereal and fruits and fresh ground coffee.
