Overall enjoyed my brief time at Mur-bah - it was a short placement but felt well supported during daytime hours by registrars. I worked on the Gen Med ward, and in the evenings covered the ward and the rehab ward as well. It was very chill overall, with minimal after hours jobs with only the occasional cannula or clincial review. In the evenings there is a physician on call who is usually happy to be called, and can call the ED in charge for assistance if required. Overall enjoyed my time there and would happily go back. I stayed in an airbnb approx 10 minutes drive away which worked well!
Murwillumbah is a pleasant place to work as a med reg. The title "med reg" is a bit generous - you're really somewhere between an RMO and a reg and the acuity is very low. Lots of geriatric patients with fractures or other minor medical ailments. Lots of complex discharge planning, nursing home placements, and so on. I was never responsible for admissions or giving advice externally over the phone. There were prolonged periods where I was alone on the ward but the VMOs I worked under were very happy to provide advice over the phone in the rare case that it was required. The hospital itself is dated but in an absolutely beautiful location on a hill in Murwillumbah, which means some of the ward rooms have jaw-dropping views. Highly recommend to any reg or RMO if they want a leisurely paced locum.
Nice ED. 10ish acute beds, 1x resus. 2 FACEMS during the day (morning and evening, long crossover). Staggered shifts of juniors makes for good coverage. Able to work independently but also always be able to run things past FACEM. Lovely team on the day I was there. Lots of GP issues as well as higher acuity stuff. Big 'clearing the wait room's mentality.
