Emergency Registrar

Description

Lismore Base Hospital is a 300-bed public hospital that provides medical and surgical services to the residents of Lismore, New South Wales and the surrounding area. The hospital has a 24-hour emergency department and offers general medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, intensive care unit (ICU), cardiology angiography suite and renal dialysis services.

The local community is served by a number of excellent restaurants including The Railway Hotel restaurant which specialises in locally sourced produce from the Northern Rivers region. There are also many outdoor activities available in the area such as hiking in nearby Tweed Heads National Park or swimming at one of the many beaches located along the NSW North Coast.

There are plenty of things to do in Lismore when you're not working at the hospital. For example, there's Nimbin - a small town known for its alternative lifestyle and hippie culture. There's also the Nightcap National Park which is perfect for hiking and camping enthusiasts. And if you're after some time on the water, Lake Ainsworth is nearby where you can go swimming or canoeing/kayaking.

In terms of amenities, Lismore has everything you need including supermarkets, cafes & restaurants (including vegan-friendly options), boutiques shops and parks & gardens galore! Not to mention that it's only 2 hours drive from Brisbane so if you want a city break then that's easily accessible too!

Lismore Base Hospital is an active teaching facility for medical students from James Cook University who rotate through their clinical years as part of their training. It's also adjacent to Southern Cross University so there are ample learning opportunities for those doing locum work here.

Very lovely ED. 2 FACEMS on at time, 6-7 juniors/registrar's. Nurses and doctors all very lovely. Got given a great orientation the first day and had fun working independently but with support whenever I needed it, and always a facem to chat to. Worked in acute area, and also fast track. With ortho, gen surg and gen med on site, referral pathways were very easy, and there was good flow through the ED with minimal ramping (like 2 hours max the whole time I was there). Wait room fluctuates, I saw between 4-20 waiting at a time. Lismore itself is a bit rough, higher crime rate and lots of ice and mental health issues that you see come through the ED. Good mental health team though who see patients in a timely manner. Invercauld house was brilliant, free washing machine use, juice, milk, coffee, biscuits, hot chocolate restocked daily, and a pool.

Level: RMO Department: GenMed Shifts: 8am to 4:30pm Monday to Saturday Had a great time in Lismore hospital in the gen med team. Monday to Friday, you’re allocated to a team. Typical gen med day - long rounds and handover. However, jobs were as expected in a normal hospital. I had a very good team with friendly consultants and registrars. The consultants are very humble and approachable. Accomodation is great too. It’s next door to the hospital. New facilities and very modern. Free Netflix at accom. Parking available. Small kitchenette with microwave, toaster and kettle. There is a communal kitchen too if you wanted to meal prep - clean as well. King sized bed - huge plus. The weekend shift is basically ward call. There’s 2 med registers and 2 residents. There are no usual teams doing rounds. Only sick patients are rounded on. These weekend shifts can be chaotic as there’s quite a bit to do - definitely very doable. But, can be disrupted when you need to help certain bosses round. I’ve given communication 3 stars because you’re literally dumped into it when you get there. Accomodation communication is 5/5 stars - no issues at all. There were some miscommunication with logins and where to be etc. Not bad, but definitely areas of improvement. Overall would recommend.

Great ED. Well set out, really nice FACEMs. Had good support and could run everything by someone. Saw a lot of patients in the waiting room which was sometimes difficult to find a place to see them, but overall was quite good. Has gen surg and other specialties you can call during the day IT system very easy to pick up, had no issues. Stayed at Invercauld House - nice little apartments, good bed and large modern bathroom, room service everyday with milk and juice and coffee, had a pool and free washing machine/dryer with washing powder provided!!! Hire car also super nice.

I had a very easy few days on gen med. My team was not ontake at the time and I had a very relaxed few days. Other teams were a bit busier but very manageable. Bosses were hands on, in hospital most of the day helping with jobs and seeing consults. Lovely teams and well supported. As an RMO, I worked with a consultant and registrar. There was 1x intern or RMO per team. Invercauld house is brilliant to stay. Get a hire car, lovely and quick drive. There is free parking at the hospital too.

I would avoid working at lismore base hospital again. Many locums including myself had a very difficult time working there. Jobs were misadvertised and many locums did not get what they were expected. One of the worst bits was 24 hour on calls with some fairly unsupportive seniors. There is a high staff turnover for these reasons.
